Best is what sense? Gentle introduction? Huge gory details? What topics precisely? Game development is a huge field that covers pretty much anything.

Also choices you make could depend upon the type of game you want to develop and the platform for which you are targeting.

There is usually no "best book" when it comes to programming in general. There are only "good books" :-)

ZapB is right, what topic of game development are you looking for? Graphics, physics, networking, AI, what??? A general game development book isn't going to teach you anything. I would look "here for more info":www.gamedev.net

"Here is one book on game physics that I enjoyed ":http://www.amazon.com/Physics-Morgan-Kaufmann-Interactive-Technology/dp/1558607404

                "Here is another":http://www.amazon.com/Real-Time-Collision-Detection-Interactive-Technology/dp/1558607323/ref=pd_sim_b_1

                        Thanks ;-)
I am quite interested in the topic as well, but I guess one should begin with pretty basic, pure c++ stuff, get some background with OpenGL applications, learn to use an engine (like OGRE) and still will need to learn quite a bit (designing characters and levels/terrain which needs skills in applications like Blender, etc).

If anyone is doing these kind of stuff, it'll be nice of him to share =/
