Qt webenginewidgets do not work on embedded platforms

In the thread "https://forum.qt.io/topic/51257/imx6-qtwebengine-black-surfaces/4" the user agocs states that "webenginewidgets is known to be broken on embedded at least".
Are there more details on this? I'm bringing up Qt 5.4.1 on an embedded platform and the webegine example "quicknanobrowser" works fine, but I just get black blocks with webeginewidgets examples "browser" and "fancybrowser".
I felt this was an important enough topic to warrant its own thread so I started this one.
Any clarifications on this issue would be much appreciated.
