    Hi everyone!

It's time to get rid of the ancient version of the NodeBB we're currently running and continue with version 2.8.x. Due to the big jump in version number, the database schema upgrade will unfortunately take 5-6 hours and the forum will be down during that time.

The maintenance will start at 8:00 (UTC+2), so in a couple of minutes and hopefully we're up and running after 6+ hours.

    Thanks for your patience!

Aaaand the forum update is done! Everything seems to work, but we'll see how it goes once we get some real load on the server.

        Hi,

        Thanks for the update !

From a couple of tests on my side, the forum seems to be slower to load.

On another note, it seems to behave strangely if you have multiple editors opened at the same time.

OTOH, it has a nice vertical blue line against each post ;-)

@SGaist There are couple of known issues that were left unresolved yesterday. One is gzipping the assets and that should make the forum respond faster. But we will fix those next.

@ollipuu the "old editors" issue happened today again on mobile. I had to dismiss about 10 such popups before being able to access the forum.

@SGaist So what is the issue exactly? Can you somehow reproduce the situation?

@J-Hilk Well... we went from 1.12 to 2.8.0 so you can check pages 1-18 here: https://github.com/NodeBB/NodeBB/releases 😄

@ollipuu Sadly, I cannot reproduce at will.

What has happened is that I opened a web page and loaded the forum. Then I would get several editor opening one after the other. On the left side, where you usually have the "Replying to" orange icon that you can use to show/hide the editor, I would have several of them on top of each other but all pertaining to old threads.

I am currently wondering whether these where not from a cache somewhere that has staled and they were editors from pages that were closed while editing the answer.

@ollipuu I've two questions. Not a big deal but small downgrades IMO:

                          1. When you go to someone's profile page it now shows their "best" posts. It used to show their recent posts list. Now you need an extra click either on the counter or in a menu to get to that list. Is that intentional or some default just changed in new version? Can this be configured or rolled back to previous behavior?

                          2. When typing a response to someone i.e. @ it used to suggest a list of people in the current thread first i.e. here if I typed @o your nick would be listed first. Now it just lists everyone starting with o, so you need to type more. It lists thread participants if you just type @, but if the person you're looking for is last you have to hit down arrow multiple times, where previously it was enough to type the first letter or two. Can this be reverted to previous behavior?

@ollipuu Another one - can you try to declutter the UI a bit? Maybe some toned down style - less whitespace, fade the colors of unimportant stuff, make the events and indicators less pronounced (smaller?) etc.

Here's an example. 3 lines of actual content and a lot of colorful noise, whitespace, indicators, lines etc.

Thanks for all the feedback. Nothing has been changed intentionally, every possible change comes from the NodeBB upgrade itself. But we'll look if those changes could be easily (setting/template overwrite/hook) reverted back to original behaviour. If we need to edit the forum core, we'll most likely won't do it as each core change will make the future upgrades more difficult.

When we go to our personal posts history (by clicking on out avatar) we are now presented with a whole section of Best posts made by JonB and only scrolling down do we later find Latest posts made by JonB. I cannot believe the Best Posts is really a useful addition, seems like somebody put it in just for the sake of it! I want to always see latest posts in date order, just like it always did, don't most people...?

Umm, the order now seems to have reversed, I get Latest posts before Best now....

But, but, but... The old way (latset posts only) was an expanding, scrolling list. Now it is limited to the last few posts :( Often i have go scrolling through all my latest posts to find one. Now I can't, i could not even find this post to reply to! Please don't tell me I hahe to use Search now instead??

Is there any way to just have the old endlessly scrolling list of posts in date order? :)

You can click on the posts counter below your picture or click the 3 dot menu and Posts in there.
