FFT and other magic...

I am voluntarily re-entering the (to me) "complex" word of Fourier analysis.
The real application is TDR - Time domain reflectometry - used to electronically determine the (unknown) length of (coaxial) cable.
The FFT is used to "replace sending a pulse " down the coax and measuring the time of its return ; and the replacements is FFT magic usage of known frequencies etc etcThe reason for my interest in FFT - the software I am using does not want to run consistently and I like to know why...
So I am looking for a reasonable "how to use FFT, tracking results in step by step fashion " resource...and I prefer college material and NO u-tube.
