      Hi, and welcome!

Do I have to pay Qt if I want to work as a freelancer?

Being a freelancer vs. being an employee is not relevant.

You pay the Qt Company if you want to use Qt under the commercial license and/or you want to receive direct support from the Qt Company's support engineers.

and if I work without paying them, will my work be illegal?

Your work will be legal if you comply with the license that you use.

There are 3 licenses to choose from:

      • Commercial (includes all Qt modules)
      • GPL (includes all Qt modules)
      • LGPL (includes most, but not all, Qt modules)

Which ones do you want to use? Which ones can you comply with?

Then you must make your software available to your customers under the GPL license too. The main thing you must do is to give your customers the source code, and allow them to study/modify the code and build their own versions.

No monetary payment is required if you use Qt under the LGPL license. You are encouraged to contribute to the community instead of paying.

                Note:

                • You must still take care to comply with the LGPL requirements.
                • Not all Qt modules are available under the LGPL license. For example, the Qt Network Authorization module and the Qt Quick 3D module are only available under commercial/GPL licenses, but not LGPL.
